Many of the Elders in the Program live in traditional hogans or simple homes that are heated with firewood. The most traditional Elders also cook with firewood. As they get older, it becomes more difficult for them to gather firewood on their own. Much of the firewood for these Elders comes from a hundred or more miles away from where they live.
The Program has made arrangements for Elders to have firewood delivered to them -- but each load of firewood costs about $100 a load, and depending upon how far the wood has to be delivered, the costs can go up from there.
The gift of firewood is one of the most appreciated gifts the older Elders can receive.
