Marty Whitehair

Hello! I was born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona near Big Mountain.

I learned to weave at the age of six through the teachings of my grandmother, the late Sarah Robertson, my mother, Rena Robertson, and my father, Martin Whitehair, and paternal grandmother, the late Arlene Whitehair. My grandmother once told me, “Shi tsoi. You will learn to weave and to keep weaving so that you will always be able to sustain yourself. There will be no limit to your designs. Through the discipline of weaving, you will learn to know who you are and where you come from.”

Keeping my grandmother’s words with me, I have been able to walk outside my comfort zone and create my own styles from the old style designs. I started weaving to earn income. Now, I continue a legacy.
